Delving Deep #7: Mastering the "Hand-off" – The Art of the Transition

The ultimate goal of a Foil Drive™ Gen2 session is to find the perfect synergy between electric power and raw ocean energy. For many riders, the hardest part isn’t getting up on the foil—it’s knowing when to stop. The "Hand-off" is that precise moment you release the trigger and allow your foil wing to take over the heavy lifting.

The Hybrid Assist: More Than Just an extension

If an eFoil is a motorbike, a Foil Drive™ is an electric-assist bicycle. It isn’t designed to do all the work for you; it is designed to give you the "nudge" you need to get onto a wave, lift off in light winds, or explore coastlines that were previously unreachable.

By attaching a slim, high-performance motor to your existing foil mast, the Foil Drive™ allows you to keep using your favourite gear while gaining the ability to "kickstart" your flight whenever you choose.

⚙️ The "Dead-Stick" Entry Drill

One of the most common mistakes is "motoring" through a wave. To master the transition, you must learn to trust your foil’s lift without propulsive assistance.

  • The Action: As you feel the swell begin to pick up your board, release the trigger entirely before you are fully on the wave face.

  • The Benefit: This forces you to find the "sweet spot" of the wave's power. If you stay on the motor too long, you often outrun the wave, ending up in flat water where the foil eventually drops.

🌊 Managing the Thrust-to-Glide Pitch

There is a specific physical shift that occurs the moment the motor stops. When engaged, the motor creates a rotational force that naturally wants to push the nose of the board up.

Technical Note: When you let go of the trigger, that upward force vanishes instantly. To prevent a nosedive, subtly lighten your front-foot pressure or shift your hips back slightly at the exact moment of release to neutralize the pitch.

✨ Ready to boost your flight?

At Beyond the Shore, we love gear that lowers the barrier to entry while respecting the traditions of the sport. The Foil Drive™ is whisper-quiet, incredibly versatile, and fits in a backpack. It’s for the surfer who wants more waves, the winger who wants to fly in zero wind, and the family looking to add a bit of "electric magic" to their ocean adventures.

🛠️ The "Pulse" Strategy for Connection

Mastering the hand-off also means knowing how to re-engage. Professional riders rarely hold 100% throttle; they "pulse" the motor to connect sections.

  • The burst

    • 100% power for 2-3 seconds

    • Ideal scenario: Catching a fast-moving peak from a standstill.

  • The Pulse

    • 40–50% power rhythmic intervals

    • Ideal scenario: Navigating "dead water" to reach the next swell.

  • The Glide

    • 0% power (Trigger released)

    • Ideal scenario: Once the foil is locked into the wave's energy.
